Although looking at these photos from Mono Lake, you could be forgiven for thinking we were in an alien landscape…

Tufa

It was our intention to cross the mountains and go on to Yosemite from here, but the weather closed in so we headed for the Calfornia coast instead.
It looks like there isn’t a lot of plant life. Is it a volcanic lake? It reminds me a bit of ‘craters of the moon’ in Taupo..
The spires were deposited by mineral springs flowing into the bottom of the lake when it was a lot deeper. The lake level is lower because Los Angeles was diverting the water flowing into it, but it’s now slowly rising again.
