England – Wales Border

A couple of weeks ago, I wished I’d been born in North Yorkshire. This week, I wish I were A Shropshire Lass! I would never have thought of having a holiday in this area, but it is really beautiful, with some lovely towns.

Since we were staying near Oswestry, we thought we might as well have a look.

Shrewsbury is a lovely town for couples with different interests. There is a great shopping area…

but also (apparently) a wonderful military museum in the castle. This was originally Norman, but from Wikipedia I think this has been restored to how it looked around 1300. It looks newer, I didn’t know they built like this at that time.

Just when you thought you couldn’t look at another black and white building…

This could be a H&S issue if you met it in the town centre – you might not see it!

Charles Darwin was born nearby. Read about him on Wikipedia, it’s really interesting.

Even beautiful towns have crime. Or is it a Triffid?

I was happy pronouncing this as “Pontsisilt” but apparently it should be Pont-ker-sulth-tay. I have decided to stick with Pontsisilt. Even my Celt husband is avoiding it! This was a great day out, visiting the various locations. Dog lovers, if you haven’t been already, you can walk your dog over here, I saw several.

There is a really ugly red brick building to the left of the aqueduct. I like to think it wouldn’t be allowed now.

You can’t tell in this small picture, but the boat ahead must have broken down on the aqueduct, and is being pushed by some of the people walking across!

I like my history brought to life, I would never have bothered reading about Thomas Telford and the canals if I hadn’t visited.

It’s quite nerve racking, walking across, you feel the need to hang on to the railings every time you stop! I dread to think what Harvey would do, off his lead up there!

Can’t really do justice to this, with limited places to stand.

After the canals came the railways. The railway viaduct was built  higher than the aqueduct, to show the superiority of the railways!

Apparently, the Llangollen Canal is the most interesting and beautiful in the country.

Ludlow – I have been wanting to visit Ludlow for years. As with many places you are keen to visit, it didn’t quite live up to expectations. It is very photogenic, though!

Yes, more black and white, but isn’t this one lovely? You can stay here for £145 the night, on 5 June at any rate. I would love to have a look round inside!

Our next border town is Hereford, however, we couldn’t find a campsite there, so we will be staying at Malvern, which is fine as there are many interesting places around there!

  1. I went to Ludlow Castle on a school trip once. I remember the weather was miserable and I didn’t really enjoy it.
