A couple of weeks ago, I wished I’d been born in North Yorkshire. This week, I wish I were A Shropshire Lass! I would never have thought of having a holiday in this area, but it is really beautiful, with some lovely towns.

Since we were staying near Oswestry, we thought we might as well have a look.
I should have been born in North Yorkshire, rather than South – it’s much nicer!
Tank engine 80072 of the North York Moors Railway blows off steam as it departs with a passenger train fromĀ Pickering Station in North Yorkshire, England, UK.
We are practising our steam train photography. One thing we have realised is that they are unpredictable – we didn’t know all this steam would come straight at us!
North Berwick was a complete washout. We moved on to Berwick-on-Tweed, England’s most northerly town, and further north than some parts of Scotland. It’s a very nice town…

We’ve started 2016 with a trip to the stunning Yorkshire Coast. The weather has reminded us of British Holidays We Have Had over the years, but we did get one sunny day.
Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK
The weather was so bad we didn’t bother going into Aberdeen, but we couldn’t resist seeing Dunnottar Castle, which must have the most dramatic location of any Scottish Castle.
Colin has always said that the west coast of Scotland is far more interesting than the East, and he is right. The top of the west coast is very spectacular, then you get to the actual north coast, which is just moorland. We crossed in very dull weather, and arrived at John o’ Groats, which, considering it is so famous, has very little going for it.

We had a night here to break the journey. Looks like we had great weather! but it was only for a short while. We didn’t take any more photos until we got to John o’ Groats, where we also had only a small amount of sunshine.
We are further north now than we have ever been before, on the ground at any rate! Checked a map, and we are further north than the southern tip of Norway! I hadn’t realised Britain went that far!
This is a very beautiful island. I hadn’t thought it would be as lovely as Skye, but it is. Different, but just as nice. The most famous attraction here is the Callanish Stone Circle.

We were lucky enough to get these lovely clouds on the first day we were here.

Who could resist stopping off at Eilean Donan Castle? We photographed it last time we were here, but the light was kinder this time, both in the evening…
