Meanwhile, up in the Mountains

We’re back from our 2 day trip to the Great Wall, and here’s where we spent last night. The place is called Red Capital Ranch, on the Shentangyu section of the Wall.

Here’s our cabin, built from local stone and architectural salvage from Beijing and elsewhere. Interesting place, but a trifle chilly – memories of Yosemite spring to mind. We were the first and only guests of the season, and gloves were useful in the dining room, especially for breakfast.

We went to the tidier (and more touristy) section of Wall at Mutianyu this morning; bright and cold, and very dry looking there. Quite like Central Otago, including the orchards.

  1. At the ranch, Colin ate a typical Chinese chicken and sauce combination, I had lamb ribs which was very tasty, but did not taste like lamb as we know it. For breakfast we had yak’s milk yoghurt with granola, toast and local honey, Lurpak butter!
