At last, a blog post…..

The weather has mostly been very good, just a couple of days of rain so far. It’s a good excuse to sit in the van and do nothing!

We have been testing out the under 3 Euro wines, (reds) and have to say they are very drinkable, much better than the French wines we got for 6 Pounds from Morrisons! We have decided to stock up before we leave France, with enough to last the rest of our trip.

The French seem to be not very adventurous eaters, there isn’t anything like the selection in their supermarkets that we have in UK and NZ. They just seem to eat French food.

We have been getting into the crepes and galettes. I have bought a cook book so that when I get home, I can make some. We like the one with cheese, ham and fried egg!

I’m not that keen on the unisex toilets and showers you get on a lot of camp sites, and Colin thinks the urinals, or pissoirs as they call them, were designed by exhibitionist men or voyeuristic women. It’s very odd to be walking along and just glance around, and there’s some man….

There are not a lot of medium sized dogs here. There are lots of very small ones, often kept in pairs, and a few very large hairy ones. Not many labs, lots of poodles.

We are currently at Quiberon. Tomorrow we are going to Belle-Ile on the boat, then we will take a coach tour around the island. After that, we will probably leave Brittany, we are going to drive to Angers, then along the Loire Valley to Orleans, then north to Chartres, Monet’s garden at Giverny, and cross the channel from Dieppe. After that, we are going to go around the SE coast of England and on to Constable country in Suffolk. There is way more to do than we have time for!

Carnac – have been wanting to go here for years. They have 3000 standing stones, all in lines. Strangely, they aren’t as impressive (IMO) as Stonehenge!

  1. Interested in your observations about the wine. I’ve long supposed the French send us the wine they consider undrinkable, knowing that with a bit of marketing effort it can be sold at premium prices to people with more money than taste. Anything drinkable, they keep for themselves, and can afford to sell it at sensible prices due to the subsidy they get in sterling.

That’s why I drink wine from California, Italy, Spain, South America, The Antipodes … everywhere but France!

  2. OMG! When I read Stuart’s comments, he sounds just like you Mum!!! We are now in our new permanent building at work. Just had a 4.2 and the building seemed to perform well, just rattled a bit. Not much news here. We are off to Borneo on 16th Aug! Harvey is going for a holiday at Bunny Lodge. It has two dog swimming pools so he should be happy enough there!!

  3. I can just imagine Harvey, lying by the pool in his sunnies, jumping in at will and having a little swim. He won’t want to come home! We met an English couple here with their dog, and it could entertain itself. It stood at the top of a slope, dropped its ball, then ran and fetched it, over and over!. Not too many slopes in Chch unfortunately!
Stuart, do I take it you don’t want me to bring you a couple of crates?
