Viewing Autumn Colour

The Japanese are very fond of going out mob-handed to view the colours of the trees in autumn, and Tofuku-ji is one of the most popular sites in Kyoto for this. There are crowd marshals on the approach roads to keep the streams of foot traffic in and out on opposite sides of the road.

Kyoto gets about 30 million visitors a year, mainly domestic, and here are some of them crowding the deck at Kiyomizu-dera, with Kyoto city in the distance. This is at 9.20 am.
