The Last Post (from this trip)

If you don’t get the pun in my title, YouTube is your friend. That first comment by LOA Whispers, that poem is inscribed on Wombwell War Memorial, just by the traffic lights, so I read it just about every time I go past. I feel as if I have been reading it all my life, in fact I pretty much have! I see there is an Andre Rieu version too! Of the tune, not the poem.

We have been pretty lazy about processing recently, we are definitely ready for a change. However I have forced myself to do some so that I could make this (final) post.

I noticed our reflections in this when processing, but too hard to remove them. It moves, you can probably find a video if you are interested.

This scene is repeated all over Cambridge. It makes me wonder if the bikes are on permanent display as a tourist attraction.

Did this last year without leaves, thought it would be better with, but in fact it just hides a lot.

The romantic young couple just makes this shot, I think.

Punting on the River Cam, Cambridge, England, UK

Ah, punting on the Cam. Every time the newspapers run an article on great weather, they always include punting on the Cam. Maybe all the journalists went to Cambridge and they haven’t heard of anywhere else, apart from Brighton beach and Hyde Park of course.

Bury St Edmunds

After the dreary weather last time we visited, this time it was really too sunny, moan, moan, moan…just like NZ, too damn sunny, boring blue sky…

A man with a phone camera approached me here, and asked if I could tell him where the best shots were, as he was in a hurry! I told him I didn’t know as I had only just arrived. Then I watched him running around, then he came and told me he wasn’t impressed with the gardens. That is just his excuse for terrible photos, I suspect.

The town has a very nice shopping centre, apart from this mall. No pics, too damn sunny, heavy shadows…

When I was young I thought all old people looked alike, and I still think it. That isn’t Colin with the doggy, Colin is taller, but apart from that looks the same. Also he carries a camera, not a dog. You will notice that as so often happens, the engine came in backwards. When we returned (yes, we had a ride on this one, it was going where we wanted to go) it was directly into the sun (too damn sunny).

Another surprisingly nice town, with a lovely cathedral – that isn’t it. This is where we went on the train. Nice shopping centre, I continued with my crazy shopping spree.

Stamford is just by Burleigh House and is really beautiful. It’s very old and doesn’t appear to had any new buildings in hundreds of years.

When I look closely at that boy I can see he has got that puzzled look on his face, why are you pointing that thing at me? This is one reason why we are hoping to change our cameras soon, for something that looks a bit more touristy. No one turns a hair if you point a phone camera at them.

Another lovely old town, England is full of them. Didn’t buy anything here, though I tried.

Ah, Nottingham. Apparently the legend, if it is one, goes back to the time of King Richard and King John, so maybe he did exist.

I read somewhere recently that when you travel a lot, everywhere reminds you of somewhere else, and for me that is certainly true. This reminded me of Las Ramblas in Barcelona, what do you think Caroline?

We saw a sign pointing to the Sky Mirror, so we had to find out what it was. I said to Colin, that’s amazing, I am standing right next to it and I can’t see myself. He pointed out that everything is upside down. I hadn’t noticed that. Oh dear.

Robin Hood could have drunk here?

These look like the troglodyte dwellings in the Loire Valley, but apparently they were used for storage.

How lucky we were to get such a lovely day. The clouds soften the light, making the photos look that much nicer.

A perfect family posing unwittingly for my shot. Now, if the red jacket and the woman changed places it would just be a touch better. I suppose I could Photoshop it.

So, this could not have been the tree in the RH story, as it would not then have been big enough. Not as old as some of those big trees in the North Island, and doesn’t look like it will last that long.

And, just in case you wanted a shot without people….

We have been down to Llandudno and left our car and caravan there, ready for our return. It is a really beautiful part of the world, easily as good as NZ. We are now in Yorkshire, and fly to NZ tomorrow, so see you all soon!
