Not that it’s a problem, we like Edinburgh! We had a week here, maybe three days good weather, the rest we had to find ways to entertain ourselves. We went to a couple of exhibitions, one impressionist, one surrealist. Spent time in the caravan. Went shopping. I went into the White Stuff flagship store, that was fun!
As predicted, there is no blog from Castleton. We spent four days sitting in the caravan, listening to the rain pounding down on the roof. It was a shame, as there was a lot of heather in flower, it would have looked really pretty. I have noticed that England and Wales seem to have a lot more heather than Scotland, so I don’t know why Scotland is so famous for heather. At least we had internet to entertain ourselves! Who can remember the days before internet? What did we do? Our last site in the Lake District had no internet or phone. This always peeves me, I feel like sulking and saying I’m not going on any more sites without internet. Then I think, how ridiculous, I lived 40 years without it! I can remember the first time Colin showed me email, must have been about 1992, one of those jaw dropping moments, and saying, it’s going to change everything, and sitting there thinking about all the things that would change. Well, here we are, in just those few years it has changed everything, to the point where I feel like sulking if I can’t have it. No matter what I tell myself, I am still glad to move on back to civilization, and get my internet fix. Still, the weather was quite nice in the lakes, we were able to go out every day.
Collecting for Oxfam in the street at Cockermouth, Cumbria, UK
This old man didn’t manage to escape the clutches of the Oxfam collector.
Statue of Llewellyn ap Lorwerth, or Llewellyn the Great, in Lancsater Square, Conwy, Wales, UK.
OK, so we have now found another couple of quite nice towns in Wales – Llandudno and Conwy. The other towns along the north coast are even worse that the others we have seen. Who remembers Rhyl? Kate was there, with her Mum and Dad, Jacqui and Will, riding on a donkey. Vicky was there, aged 1, with her Mum and Dad, two dogs, playing on the sunny, crowded beach, we had a really good day. Vic and Caroline were there, a few years later, at the Sun Centre, having a fun time. Well, Rhyl is now an absolute dump. Unbelievable – worse than Bridlington, worse than Great Yarmouth. The Sun Centre has gone – demolished in the last couple of months. Apparently they are going to build something else, and revitalise the town. We shall see!
From the photos you might think we had lovely sunny weather, but far from it. We have also been very lacking in internet coverage, to entertain ourselves whilst sitting in the caravan. However…
Marine Beach and Criccieth Castle, Criccieth, Gwynedd, Wales, UK
We arrived at St David’s, the UK’s smallest city, on a beautiful sunny day, We rushed up into the city, which is really just a village, and had a quick look at the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace – very nice! Somehow, we didn’t take the cameras with us. The next three days were fog, fog, and fog – it seems to be one of those places where fog gathers and hangs around. After a couple of days, we realised that if we drove north or inland, it was sunny!
Family shopping in Cardigan High Street, Ceredigion, Wales, UK
Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK, from Castle Hill.
Tenby is a lovely little place, full of interesting bits and pieces, and somehow it has managed to continue being successful – unlike so many British seaside towns, which have become so run down these days.
Again we’ve been left with lots not done due to rubbish weather, but we’ve decided to persevere, as the chances of getting a couple of months of good weather in Wales are slim!
27 June 2016: Cardiff, Wales, UK – Traffic alongside Cardiff Castle, Cardiff, Wales, UK
A very complete castle, and apparently beautiful inside.
Although Colin claims Scotland as his home, he lived in Worcester from the age of 5. He lost his Scottish accent, because the locals couldn’t understand him! In fact, I’ve noticed recently that he’s been emphasizing his Irish ancestry – have the Scots Nationalists put him off?
People shopping in Worcester High Street, Worcestershire, England, UK
I though this was father and daughter, but it’s a tall man and a short woman! Is this what Colin and I look like?
A couple of weeks ago, I wished I’d been born in North Yorkshire. This week, I wish I were A Shropshire Lass! I would never have thought of having a holiday in this area, but it is really beautiful, with some lovely towns.
Oswestry Town Centre and Market Cross, Shropshire, England, UK
Since we were staying near Oswestry, we thought we might as well have a look.
